Album Review: The Hard Aches – Mess

Band: The Hard Aches
Album: Mess
Label: Anchorhead

The Hard Aches have just released their new album “Mess”, and the Adelaide based 2 piece have decided to take on some very emotional and easily ignored issues. Its personal, its confronting, but it’s also needed. Ben David may well become a voice for those who do not have one, whether it’s a hat he intentionally set out to wear, I am not sure, but it may well be the biggest hat he wears in his life, along with his heart on his sleeve.

Mess explores the sometimes glossed over issues of mental health, but he has done so not just though reflection, and observation but also through showing the road ahead, maybe the light at the end of a very dark tunnel for some and the need for self-belief.

The delicate relationships with yourself and with others are explored and while some may see the subject matter as negative the positive undercurrent flows through all the album tracks. The bands song writing strength shows through with songs like “Get Out of My House “ which has some Cure-like moments, mixed with punk elements, to the pop-ish “On the Mend”, and then straight up Punk in “Family”

Take the time out to actually listen to the album, not just hear it. Really listen. Give it a few spins and take it all in and you will really have a different appreciation of life. The Hard Aches are also out playing shows at the moment. Get out and support them and show them some love.
